Beloved Querents,

 

Mother Nature has thrown a wrench into the workings here at Cards and Clay. We are located in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Asheville, NC. On October 27th, our lives were forever changed by the destructive forces of Hurricane Helene. Although she wasn’t quite a hurricane when she whirled her way into our lives, she dumped a staggering 15 inches of rain onto an already saturated landscape. The rivers overflowed their banks, and the water rose 15 to 20 feet in some places. Homes and businesses, people and animals, plants and trees were washed away. The devastation was unimaginable!

 

Although downtown Asheville was spared the worst, we were trapped by fallen trees and debris and left without water, power, phone service, or internet for days. Even now, a month later, we are still without potable water. I write all this to let you know what’s happening here in the land of Cards and Clay. I usually read tarot from our clothing boutique, Hip Replacements, in downtown Asheville, but now, there are no tourists. It was only last week that I finally obtained reliable internet service to resume online readings.

 

My clay practice has also been on hold. I am hoping to resume today and complete a few projects I began before the storm. Highwater Clay, the warehouse where I purchase clay, glazes, and other materials, was flooded and has permanently closed. I’ll now have to drive to South Carolina to restock. It’s a big, messy situation. We don’t know when we’ll be able to use the water that comes from our faucets again, nor are we certain the store can survive this decline in tourism. Bills for rent, internet, electricity, and phone services are all still due.
